Wed Sep 25 09:55:04 UTC 2024: ## Carey’s Return Leaves Australia with a Happy Headache: Selection Dilemma Ahead of Champions Trophy

Australia is facing a welcome selection headache as Alex Carey’s superb form in the ongoing ODI series against England has thrown a spanner in the works ahead of the Champions Trophy in Pakistan next year.

Carey, who stepped in for the injured Josh Inglis as wicketkeeper, has scored 74 and 77* in his two innings, forcing head coach Andrew McDonald to contemplate a potential three-keeper scenario.

“It’s always a good problem to have when you’ve got people competing for spots within your team,” McDonald said. “Alex has jumped into that spot and done incredibly well. It’s something we will consider.”

The coach also acknowledged the possibility of fielding both Carey and Inglis in the same XI, a situation that was not entirely unfamiliar as recently as last year.

Another selection challenge lies in accommodating three fast-bowling all-rounders: Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, and Marcus Stoinis. Hardie’s impressive showing in the third ODI, where he smashed 44 runs off 26 balls and bowled five overs for 26 runs, further complicates the issue.

McDonald emphasized the team’s desire to have multiple playing styles, including the option of utilizing an eighth batter, which has been explored previously. However, the availability and fitness of the all-rounders often limit this approach.

Australia also faces a potential return of Adam Zampa and Travis Head for the remaining two ODIs, adding further depth to the squad. While Zampa was sidelined due to illness, Head is expected to recover from his injury.

Despite the selection quandary, Australia leads the five-match series 2-1. The team’s success, however, is likely to be overshadowed by the exciting challenge of building the ideal team composition for the upcoming Champions Trophy.
