Mon Sep 23 22:55:00 UTC 2024: ## Sri Lanka’s New President: Continuity or Change for India-Sri Lanka Ties?

**COLOMBO, Sept 23:** Following the election of Marxist leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake as Sri Lanka’s new president, former Indian diplomats have expressed cautious optimism about the future of India-Sri Lanka relations. While acknowledging the potential for a shift in dynamics due to Dissanayake’s ideology and China’s support for his campaign, experts believe the geographical proximity and shared interests between the two nations will necessitate close cooperation.

Former Secretary (East) of the Ministry of External Affairs, Anil Wadhwa, highlighted the mutual dependency between India and Sri Lanka, emphasizing the importance of a strong relationship for both countries’ security and economic well-being. He believes the relationship will remain largely unchanged, with India engaging with the new government to ensure continuity.

Venu Rajamony, former Indian envoy to the Netherlands, echoed this sentiment, noting the significance of sensitivity towards each other’s concerns and interests. He praised the previous government’s initiatives for economic integration with India and expressed hope that the new government will not impede this progress.

Both diplomats acknowledged the potential for China’s influence, given its support for Dissanayake, but believe that Sri Lanka’s strategic location and close ties with India will limit China’s ability to dominate. They emphasize the importance of continued bilateral cooperation between India and Sri Lanka for the benefit of both nations.

The election of Dissanayake marks a new chapter in Sri Lanka’s political landscape, and the impact on India-Sri Lanka relations remains to be seen. However, experts remain optimistic about the future of the relationship, based on the two countries’ shared history, interests, and geographical proximity.
