Tue Sep 24 03:23:10 UTC 2024: ## Flood Devastation Leaves Kleefeld Couple Facing $100,000 Repair Bill

**Kleefeld, MB** – Khristy Butler and her husband are facing a financial nightmare after a record-breaking downpour flooded their basement last week, leaving them displaced and facing over $100,000 in repairs. The couple is now seeking help from both the community and the government, highlighting the devastating impact of the flooding on homeowners and the need for improved infrastructure in the face of extreme weather events.

The historic rainfall, described by Environment Canada as a 120 to 130-year event, caused widespread flooding in southeastern Manitoba, including Kleefeld where Butler’s home sits on a floodplain. Despite having home insurance, Butler’s coverage for overland flooding and sewer problems was limited to $10,000, leaving a significant financial gap.

“I just cried, we lost everything here,” said Butler, describing the devastation. “I have to start from scratch again.”

The flooding damaged her furnace, hot water tank, HVAC system, and electrical panel, forcing the couple to evacuate their home. The threat of mold and potential damage to the foundation adds to the uncertainty surrounding their return.

The municipality of Hanover, where Kleefeld is located, is still tallying the number of homes impacted by the flood, with new reports coming in daily. Reeve Jim Funk expresses concern over the limited insurance coverage available to many residents.

“It’s a horrible feeling. It’s very costly because insurance is very limited in most cases,” said Funk. “We certainly would like the province to help us with this.”

The province of Manitoba has received 23 applications for Disaster Financial Assistance, a program that requires individuals to pay for damages upfront and hope for reimbursement. This poses a major hurdle for families like Butler’s who are already struggling to cover the costs.

The flooding also impacted farmers in the area, with many losing crops and facing challenges with damaged fields.

Funk highlights the need for preventative measures, stating that despite infrastructure built to code, the sheer volume of rainfall overwhelmed the existing drainage systems. He emphasizes the need for better flood mitigation strategies to prevent future disasters.

Butler urges other homeowners to carefully review their insurance policies, ensuring adequate coverage for flooding. “I never thought this would happen to me, and all of a sudden I can’t live at home.”

The community is rallying behind Butler and other affected residents with fundraising efforts and calls for increased government support. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the financial and emotional burden that can accompany extreme weather events, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and the need for robust infrastructure to withstand future challenges.
