Tue Sep 24 03:30:00 UTC 2024: ## Hurricane John Pummels Southern Mexico, Bringing Flooding and Storm Surge

**Mexico City, Mexico** – Hurricane John made landfall on Mexico’s southern Pacific coast as a Category 3 storm on Monday night, bringing with it damaging winds, life-threatening storm surge, and heavy rainfall. The US-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported the storm’s maximum sustained winds at around 120 miles per hour.

John made landfall near Marquelia in Guerrero state, with the NHC warning of ongoing hurricane-force winds, storm surge, and flash flooding. The Category 3 storm is expected to bring significant and potentially catastrophic rainfall to parts of Oaxaca and Guerrero, according to Mexico’s national water commission, Conagua.

The NHC has issued a warning for torrential rainfall, which could cause life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides in Chiapas, Oaxaca, and southeast Guerrero through Thursday.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador urged residents to seek shelter, emphasizing the importance of safety over material possessions. “Don’t forget that life is the most important thing,” he wrote on social media, “material things can be replaced.”

Authorities have issued red alerts in parts of Guerrero and Oaxaca, urging coastal residents to seek refuge from the dangerous storm surge and potential flooding. Schools have been closed in parts of Oaxaca and Guerrero in anticipation of the storm’s arrival.
