**Milwaukee, WI** – The Hunger Task Force is providing essential food assistance to over 10,000 Milwaukee County seniors each month, addressing a critical need for this vulnerable population. With many seniors living on fixed incomes and facing high medication costs, food often falls short in their tight budgets.
At McGovern Park Senior Center, one of the organization’s longest-running distribution sites, seniors gather monthly to receive stockboxes filled with healthy, nonperishable food items. These boxes often include extra fresh produce and meat, ensuring a balanced diet. The Piggly Wiggly Mobile Market is also present, offering discounted fresh fruits and vegetables.
“Just about everybody is on fixed income,” said Minnie Harmon, a recipient of the stockboxes. “This provides excellent assistance so that they are able to get their proper nutrition that they need to stay healthy.”
The program’s demand has increased significantly over the past year, with a 40% surge in people needing assistance. The stockboxes are free for seniors who sign up, but the high demand has resulted in a waiting list.
Volunteers play a crucial role in the program, assembling the boxes and ensuring they are filled with nutritious food. Jonathan Hansen, Chief Strategy Officer of Hunger Task Force, highlighted the vital support of volunteers like the staff at WISN, who have been instrumental in building awareness and supporting the program for years.
The seniors who benefit from the program express deep gratitude for the support they receive. “I would say to the Hunger Task Force, keep doing what you’re doing,” said Harmon. “It is important, and we are grateful that you’re there to assist in whatever way is needed to keep people healthy, full, and enjoying life.”
The Hunger Task Force is a non-profit organization relying on donations and volunteers to operate. If you wish to support their efforts, visit their website at hungertaskforce.org.
