**Shenzhen, China** – Huawei has finally severed ties with Android apps, completely blocking their installation on its latest HarmonyOS update. This comes as the company claims to have built a comprehensive app library, with over 10,000 apps now available on its new “HarmonyOS Next” platform, covering 99.9% of user needs.
Huawei has been working towards this transition for years, initially launching HarmonyOS as a heavily customized Android skin. While users could still sideload apps, access to Google services, including the Play Store, remained unavailable.
The company focused on convincing developers to support HarmonyOS Next, resulting in a robust app ecosystem. Huawei President of Mobile Cloud, Zhu Yonggang, announced the milestone at HUAWEI CONNECT 2024, stating that the app market now caters to virtually all user requirements.
The full launch of HarmonyOS Next is scheduled for September 24th, alongside the unveiling of new Huawei products. The company recently debuted its first tri-fold smartphone, the Mate XT, showcasing its commitment to innovation.
This move marks a significant shift for Huawei, as it fully embraces its own operating system, severing its dependence on Google’s Android platform. Whether this will lead to widespread adoption remains to be seen, but the company’s commitment to HarmonyOS and its expanding app ecosystem suggest a strong push towards independent mobile dominance.
