The upcoming BC election is set to see a significant shift in the political landscape as six new seats have been added to the legislature, all located in major urban and suburban areas. This change, stemming from the province’s rapid population growth, has resulted in a $300,000 renovation project for the legislature chamber, including a new red carpet and rearranged seating.
These new seats, in Langley, Surrey, Burnaby, Vancouver, Langford, and Kelowna, are expected to heavily influence the election outcome. Political science experts believe the urban-centric expansion favors left-leaning parties like the NDP, while the historically centre-right leaning Fraser Valley and Okanagan regions might offer the Conservatives an advantage.
“What we know from the political science literature is that where you live has a lot to do with how you vote,” explained David Black, an associate professor at Royal Roads University. “Places can choose people because places cluster qualities and features… that amplify and direct people toward certain voting preferences.”
However, Black also pointed to a long-term trend of BC’s electorate shifting leftward. The NDP’s strong performance in the 2017 election despite the rise of the Green Party suggests a significant shift in the province’s political landscape.
This new reality presents both challenges and opportunities for all parties. Centre-right parties face the challenge of winning over urban voters, while the NDP must maintain its existing support base and build new connections in the newly formed ridings.
The election will be particularly interesting in districts where urban and suburban areas meet, where even small boundary changes can have a significant impact on the results. As voters become familiar with the new ridings and their candidates, it will be crucial for them to pay attention to who is running to represent them in the upcoming election.
