A new magazine for tabletop role-playing game enthusiasts, **Horizons**, is set to launch on October 9th. Created by experienced creators Hannah Rose and Clara Daly, the quarterly publication aims to provide a diverse selection of playable content for various RPG systems, including D&D 5th Edition, Pathfinder, and Critical Role’s Candela Obscura.
Horizons seeks to fill the void left by the recent closure of Dragon Magazine, offering a platform for creators to share their adventures and reach a wider audience. Each issue will feature four articles, with three focusing on D&D and the fourth showcasing a non-D&D franchise.
“We are not telling authors what to write,” says Rose, emphasizing the magazine’s commitment to diverse content. “We invite people to pitch their own ideas and then put together issues based on what ideas we think will be really cool to develop.”
One example is “Draco Ex Astris,” written by space plasma physicist Imogen Gingell, who introduces Star Dragons with lore, stat blocks, and lair actions for different stages of their life cycle. Another D&D-compatible article, “Next Stop: Adventure,” explores the concept of rune-powered science-fantasy transportation and the Lorerider, who can exchange a story for a ride.
Rose and Daly also highlight Horizons’ dedication to fair compensation for creators, noting that they are “starting our own company from scratch, but [are] very small, [and] I have been quite active and vocal in my time in the industry about compensating people. People should be making more than minimum wage for the time they put in!”
To ensure quality and balance, Horizons undergoes two stages of playtesting for all its content. “We really allow us to know that this content is going to be balanced, that it’s going to be easily useful at the table,” says Rose.
Fans can support Horizons on Patreon and look forward to the first issue launching on October 9th.
