Mon Sep 23 17:30:48 UTC 2024: ## Tiny Hippo Moo Deng Steals Hearts Worldwide

**Khao Kheow, Thailand:** A two-month-old pygmy hippopotamus named Moo Deng has taken the internet by storm, captivating audiences with her adorable antics. Born at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand, the tiny hippo has become an international sensation, with her photos and videos being shared widely online.

Moo Deng, whose name translates to “bouncy pig” in Thai, lives up to her name with her playful and energetic personality. Zookeepers have shared heartwarming pictures of Moo Deng bathing, napping, playfully biting her handlers, and simply smiling at the camera. Her damp, shiny appearance, highlighting the purple and pink hues of her skin, adds to her unique charm.

Atthapon Nundee, a zookeeper at Khao Kheow Open Zoo, expressed surprise at Moo Deng’s international fame. “I thought she could be famous in Thailand, but not internationally,” he told The Guardian. “She is called ‘bouncy’ and she is quite ‘bouncy’ too.”

Moo Deng’s popularity has led to a surge in visitors at the zoo, eager to catch a glimpse of the adorable hippo. However, as Atthapon explains, she spends most of her time sleeping, behaving much like a human baby. “She only has milk from mom, she doesn’t eat anything else besides milk.” Moo Deng is soon to be weaned and will start eating grass, though she already enjoys mimicking her mother by chomping on air.

While Moo Deng’s cuteness is undeniably heartwarming, it also serves as a reminder of the endangered status of her species. The pygmy hippopotamus is listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List, with an estimated population of just 2,000 to 2,500 individuals remaining in the wild.

“I hope that the cuteness of Moo-Deng will raise awareness for people to come and learn about [the species],” Atthapon says. The Khao Kheow Open Zoo’s Instagram page offers regular updates on Moo Deng’s antics, but with her captivating charm, you’re likely to see her pop up on your social media feeds for the foreseeable future.
