Mon Sep 23 21:53:59 UTC 2024: ## Gwinnett County Boy Defies Odds, Finds Joy in Wheelchair Football

**PEACHTREE CORNERS, Ga.** – Nine-year-old Harrison Humphries, a fourth grader from Peachtree Corners, is defying the odds. Born with a rare condition called Phocomelia, coupled with scoliosis, Harrison has no arms, deformed legs, and wears a back brace. Despite his physical challenges, he has found joy in playing wheelchair football.

“I believe in myself, not a lot gets in my way,” Harrison said, displaying a remarkable spirit.

His doctor, Dr. Michael Schimtz, Chief of Orthopedics at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, described Harrison’s combination of conditions as “one in a million.”

However, Harrison’s determination is evident in his passion for the game. He plays wheelchair football, ignoring those who doubt his abilities.

“They try to make me doubt because I don’t have arms, and I’m in a wheelchair,” said Harrison. “It doesn’t matter.”

His parents, Tara Denton and her husband, share his passion. They understand the importance of the sport to Harrison’s life but are facing a challenge. They need to acquire a sports wheelchair to avoid damaging Harrison’s primary wheelchair, which is essential for his daily activities and doctor’s appointments.

“If it gets broken because of sports, we can’t get him to and from doctors’ appointments, to and from school,” said Denton.

Despite the difficulties, the family relies on faith and Harrison’s inspiring spirit.

“He truly is an inspiring kid,” said Denton. “He puts other people to shame.”

Harrison’s story serves as a lesson for everyone.

“They can do anything they put their mind to,” he said.
