Tue Sep 24 03:30:00 UTC 2024: ## Lab-Grown Diamonds Under Fire for Misleading Consumers: Natural Diamond Council Takes Action

**New Delhi, India:** The Natural Diamond Council (NDC) has accused some lab-grown diamond companies of spreading “malicious information” that is damaging to the diamond industry as a whole. The NDC, a non-profit organization representing natural diamond producers, is concerned that these companies are using misleading statements to create mistrust about mined diamonds.

“A minority of lab-grown diamond companies are using bad statements that are untrue,” said David Kellie, CEO of the NDC. “This is damaging for both the lab-grown diamond industry and the natural diamond industry. Most responsible lab-grown diamond manufacturers don’t want that to happen. They rely on the natural diamond industry to build desire among consumers.”

The NDC is taking action through the Advertising Standards Council of India to address these misleading statements. They have already achieved a “successful outcome” in their first complaint, and have several other complaints in progress. Kellie hopes that these actions will stop the spread of false information and deter future misrepresentation.

While the NDC acknowledges the existence of the lab-grown diamond market, they emphasize that it has had a negligible impact on mined diamond sales in India and China. The US market, however, has seen significant penetration of lab-grown diamonds, particularly among consumers seeking larger stones at lower prices. However, this trend has created challenges for retailers, who are finding it difficult to maintain profitability due to the price decline.

The NDC believes that the current downturn in the diamond industry, which has been impacted by economic challenges in China, will lead to a shift back towards natural diamonds. They also point to a split in the US market, with high-end consumers still showing strong demand while mid-tier consumers are facing pressure due to inflation.

Looking ahead, the NDC is optimistic about the upcoming festival and holiday seasons, particularly in India and the US. They are currently running social media campaigns to engage with younger generations and millennials, focusing on the values and beauty of natural diamonds. The NDC is also working to promote the growth of the engagement ring market in India.

Despite the current market volatility, the NDC remains positive about the future of the diamond industry, particularly for natural diamonds. They believe that the intrinsic value and beauty of natural diamonds, coupled with their potential for investment, will continue to drive demand in the years to come.
