**Pontypridd, Wales** – Celyn Williams, 21, is still haunted by the memory of a glassing attack that left her with a head injury a year ago. The attack, which occurred in a pub beer garden in September 2023, left Williams with a 2.5-inch gash that required multiple stitches. She also suffers from ongoing anxiety and has only ventured out three times since the incident.
Williams and her family say they feel let down by South Wales Police’s handling of the case. Despite identifying the alleged attacker, police decided not to pursue charges due to a lack of witnesses and poor quality CCTV footage. The family was frustrated by a lack of communication and updates throughout the investigation, feeling like they were being treated as inconveniences.
“We felt like we were the criminals and they were working against us,” said Williams. Her mother, Emma, added, “We feel so let down by the people who are supposed to be protecting us.”
The family has since requested a review of the police’s decision under the Victims’ Right to Review scheme. South Wales Police has promised an update by the end of July but Williams and her family are still awaiting a response.
Superintendent Michelle Conquer of South Wales Police acknowledged the family’s disappointment, stating, “We strive to put the victim at the heart of any investigation and it is disappointing when a positive outcome is not achieved for them.” The force has assured the family that an independent officer will conduct the review to ensure its thoroughness.
Williams is determined to move forward and hopes to find some sense of justice. Her mother says she hopes her daughter will be able to regain her confidence and “walk out of here with her head held high.” For now, the lasting impact of the attack continues to affect Williams’ life.
