Mon Sep 23 21:11:17 UTC 2024: ## Drogheda United Hold Galway to Scoreless Draw, Boosting Survival Hopes

Drogheda United earned a valuable point in their fight for Premier Division survival with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Galway United at Weavers Park on Saturday. The result represents a significant improvement for Drogheda, who have struggled against Galway in recent matches, including a 3-2 defeat in June that dampened hopes of staying in the top flight.

The scoreless draw, however, sees the gap between Drogheda and bottom-placed Dundalk widen to five points with five games remaining. Drogheda’s improved form gives them a fighting chance of securing their Premier Division status, even if catching Bohemians in the final standings seems unlikely.

Drogheda’s best chance of the game came in the first half when Frantz Pierrot, the in-form striker, headed a Shane Farrell cross straight at Galway goalkeeper Brendan Clarke. Galway, however, had the better of the opportunities, with Patrick Hickey denied by a fine save from Elicha Ahui and a header from Killian Brouder hitting the upright.

Despite mounting pressure from Galway in the second half, Drogheda stood firm, with goalkeeper Luke Dennison excelling in dealing with aerial threats. The result suggests that Drogheda are a more resilient team than they were a few weeks ago, offering a glimmer of hope for their survival ambitions.

The draw leaves Drogheda five points clear of the relegation zone, with their focus now shifting towards the promotion-relegation playoff if they fail to secure a top-half finish.
