**PHOENIX, AZ** – The Arizona Diamondbacks have sent infielder Luis Guillorme outright to Triple-A Reno, according to the MLB.com transaction log. The move comes after the team designated Guillorme for assignment last week when Lourdes Gurriel Jr. returned from the injured list.
Guillorme, who signed a big league deal with Arizona a month ago, appeared in 18 games for the Diamondbacks. While he drew walks at a respectable rate (11 walks, 8 strikeouts), he hit a paltry .162 with only two extra-base hits.
The Venezuelan infielder has played parts of six seasons with the Mets, providing versatility and solid defense off the bench. However, his offensive production has consistently been below average.
Guillorme has the option to decline the outright assignment and become a free agent. However, it seems likely he will accept the assignment and remain as non-roster depth for Arizona. He could potentially join the Reno Aces in their upcoming Pacific Coast League championship series.
If Guillorme accepts the assignment, he will be eligible for minor league free agency at the start of the offseason.
While Guillorme’s offensive numbers are not stellar, it’s worth noting that his wRC+ (weighted runs created plus) is only 33% below league average, comparable to other big-name players like Anthony Rendon, Kris Bryant, and DJ LeMahieu.
It remains to be seen if Guillorme will be added to the Diamondbacks’ playoff roster. He would likely be a 14th position player, providing flexibility in case of injury.
