With the upcoming presidential election, Democratic efforts are focused on mobilizing Latino voters in key battleground states like Pennsylvania, particularly those of Puerto Rican descent. This is due to their potential to be decisive in the election, considering their numbers and historic low turnout in past elections.
Over the weekend, Democratic rallies and canvassing efforts were held in predominantly Hispanic cities in Pennsylvania, aiming to reach out to Puerto Rican voters. Actors Liza Colón-Zayas and Anthony Ramos, both of Puerto Rican descent, addressed rallies in Bethlehem, urging voters to support Vice President Kamala Harris and emphasizing the political power they hold.
Meanwhile, 200 canvassers from CASA in Action, a nonprofit focused on progressive candidates, engaged with voters in Lancaster, focusing on “low propensity voters” who haven’t consistently participated in elections. The canvassers, many of whom were immigrants themselves, highlighted the importance of Puerto Rican voters as a voice for those ineligible to vote.
While the Trump campaign has tried to garner support from Puerto Rican voters, the Democratic efforts aim to highlight issues important to this community, including jobs, economy, rising costs, immigration, and abortion.
Despite historically voting for Democrats more often, Latino turnout in Pennsylvania has been low, particularly in the 2020 election. The upcoming election presents a significant opportunity for Democrats to engage Puerto Rican voters, as their participation could significantly impact the outcome in this critical battleground state.
