This rating, while an improvement from the previous “critically insufficient,” highlights the need for more ambitious action from the city-state.
While Singapore’s 0.1% contribution to global emissions may seem small, the report emphasizes the importance of collective action and highlights the potential economic consequences of inaction. The report also notes that Singapore faces unique challenges, including limited land for renewable energy sources like solar.
Despite these challenges, Singapore has taken steps to address climate change, including introducing a carbon tax and setting ambitious targets for green building construction. However, the report argues that these measures need to be strengthened.
Professor Matthew Dearth of Nanyang Business School argues that Singapore has the potential to continue its leadership role in the region by increasing its carbon tax and investing in green building materials production. This would not only reduce emissions but also create jobs and foster innovation in clean technologies.
