Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride is in concussion protocol after suffering a head injury during Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions. Head coach Jonathan Gannon confirmed the news on Monday, leaving McBride’s availability for Week 4’s matchup against the Washington Commanders uncertain.
The injury occurred in the fourth quarter when McBride collided head-on with Lions safety Brian Branch. Both players remained on the field briefly before eventually walking off under their own power.
McBride, who had a breakout season in 2023, has been a consistent presence for the Cardinals in the early stages of the 2024 season, playing in each of the first three games. He finished the Week 3 loss with three catches for 25 yards, though his performance fell below his output in the first two games.
With McBride’s status unclear, the Cardinals may turn to tight end Elijah Higgins for increased playing time. Higgins, who has four catches for 41 yards and a touchdown this season, is expected to become a primary target for quarterback Kyler Murray if Washington’s defense focuses on rookie wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., who has three touchdowns in the last two games.
The Cardinals will be monitoring McBride’s progress throughout the week to determine his availability for Sunday’s game.
