Tue Sep 24 02:39:00 UTC 2024: ## Brooklyn Football Club Kicks Off, Aiming to Score in a Crowded Soccer Market

Brooklyn, NY – A new soccer club is taking the field in Brooklyn, aiming to carve out a space in the city’s already vibrant soccer scene. Brooklyn Football Club, which launched this fall, features both a men’s and women’s team, competing in the USL Super League and USL Championship respectively.

The ambitious start-up, founded by Matt Rizzetta, is betting on the booming popularity of soccer in the United States, aiming to create a true Brooklyn identity. The club draws inspiration from the borough’s diverse culture and iconic landmarks, incorporating “brownstone” and “limestone” colors and a logo reminiscent of the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Despite its Brooklyn focus, the club’s inaugural home games are facing a logistical hurdle. The team’s initial home at Maimonides Park in Coney Island was deemed unplayable due to damaged turf. Their women’s team will now host their home games in Manhattan at Columbia University’s Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium, while the men’s team will begin play in March 2025.

The club has also encountered challenges in securing a head coach for their women’s team. The team conducted its preseason under an interim coach and will be led by Canadian Jessica Silva after visa issues delayed her arrival.

Despite the challenges, Brooklyn FC’s ambitions are clear. They aim to “not just compete but beat” MLS and NWSL teams, building their way up from the lower tiers. The club’s owners have invested approximately $20 million, and with the addition of Brooklyn-born U.S. National Team player Timothy Weah as a partner, are committed to developing a strong community presence.

The women’s team is off to a promising start with a record of 1-0-1. While the roster includes familiar faces like Taylor Smith, it also features players like Sam Rosette, a Bronx native who is excited about the opportunity to play for a local pro team.

The club’s founders are confident that there is a market for soccer in Brooklyn, and that Brooklyn FC can become a major part of the borough’s sporting landscape. “There’s a massive gaping hole of soccer there. There’s an appetite there,” said Mack Mansfield, founder of Two Bridges FC, which merged with Brooklyn FC.

As Brooklyn Football Club takes the field, both on and off the pitch, they will face a challenge in making their mark in the crowded soccer market. But their ambition, commitment to their community, and the growing popularity of the sport in the United States may be enough to help them succeed.
