**SEATTLE, WASHINGTON** – After eleven days of striking, Boeing has presented a “best and final” offer to its 33,000 striking machinists, including a 30% pay raise over four years. This comes after a previous offer of a 25% pay increase was rejected by the union, who were seeking a 40% raise.
The new offer includes an immediate 12% raise, a company match of 100% for the first 8% of pay on the Boeing 401(k) plan, continued automatic 4% company contribution, the reinstatement of an annual bonus plan, and a $6,000 ratification bonus.
While the IAM (International Association of Machinists) leadership described the offer as “validating” the workers’ demands, they remain cautious, stating the proposal will be “analyzed to see if it’s up to the task of helping workers gain adequate ground on prior sacrifices.”
The strike, which began earlier this month, has brought jet production to a near-halt. This is Boeing’s first strike in 16 years, and has significant economic impact, as Boeing is the US’ largest exporter, contributing $79 billion to the economy and supporting 1.6 million jobs.
The union’s leadership is concerned that the offer may not be enough to satisfy the membership, who have remained angry over concessions made during the last strike in 2008. The offer is contingent on a contract being ratified by September 27th. It remains to be seen if this latest offer will be enough to end the strike and get Boeing’s production back on track.
