Wed Sep 25 05:54:19 UTC 2024: ## Mumbai’s Underground Metro Line 3 Set to Open in October, Offering Speedy Travel and Affordability
Mumbai’s eagerly anticipated underground Metro Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line, is set to open its first phase to the public in October. This phase, covering 12.44 kilometers and featuring 10 stations, will connect Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to Aarey in a mere 30 minutes, costing passengers less than Rs 50.
Currently, the same journey by road can take over an hour due to traffic congestion, making the Metro Line 3 a welcome addition to the city’s transportation network. The first phase will operate from 6:30 am to 10:30 pm, offering 96 daily trips with trains arriving every 6.5 minutes during peak hours.
The minimum fare will be Rs 10, while the maximum will be Rs 50 for a one-way trip between Aarey and BKC. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the line during his visit to Mumbai, though this has not been officially confirmed.
The project, overseen by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MMRCL), has been a massive undertaking, with the decision to build it underground driven by the city’s unique urban landscape and space constraints. Building the line beneath a densely populated area with historic structures and narrow lanes posed significant challenges, requiring meticulous planning and the deployment of 17 Tunnel Boring Machines.
The Metro Line 3 is expected to significantly reduce travel time and improve connectivity, offering seamless integration with other transportation services like buses, autos, and even Mumbai’s international airport. The MMRCL has also focused on last-mile connectivity, developing access to stations and coordinating with other agencies to ensure smooth transfers for commuters.
With an expected daily ridership of 4.5 lakh passengers in the first phase, the Metro Line 3 is poised to become a vital addition to Mumbai’s infrastructure, providing much-needed relief from traffic congestion and contributing to the city’s overall development.
