These videos, tagged with “Paid Partnership,” #ad, or #sponsored, have amassed hundreds of thousands of views and promoted various political causes, seemingly violating TikTok’s own rules.

The discovery raises concerns about the effectiveness of TikTok’s moderation efforts, particularly in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election and amidst ongoing legal challenges over the platform’s potential ban. TikTok maintains that it removes 99% of violations before they are reported and employs a large team of trust and safety experts. However, the presence of these blatant violations suggests a potential loophole in the platform’s system.

While TikTok distinguishes itself from other tech giants like Facebook and Google by banning political ads, its unique position as a Chinese-owned company has drawn scrutiny from US lawmakers. Some believe the platform could be used to influence American voters, raising national security concerns.

Following NBC News’ inquiries, TikTok removed two of the identified videos, and ActBlue and TogetherSF Action also took down their content. This situation underscores the importance of platform accountability and transparency in combating potential political manipulation.
