Tue Sep 24 20:41:29 UTC 2024: ## Badlapur Rape Accused Shot Dead by Police Officer in Custody

**Mumbai, India:** Akshay Shinde, the 23-year-old accused of raping two nursery school girls in Badlapur, was shot dead by a police officer on Tuesday, September 24. The incident occurred while Shinde was in custody and allegedly attempted to escape, grabbing a police officer’s gun and firing at an assistant police inspector, injuring him.

Senior Inspector Sanjay Shinde, who previously worked on high-profile cases under the renowned encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma, retaliated, fatally shooting Akshay. The incident has sparked controversy with the accused’s family disputing the police’s claim of events, alleging that Shinde was pressured to confess to the crime and couldn’t have possibly fired at the police.

The police, however, maintain that Akshay’s actions left them no choice but to use lethal force. The incident has once again raised concerns about police brutality and the use of excessive force in custody.

Sanjay Shinde, who is part of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to investigate the Badlapur rape case, has previously faced scrutiny for various incidents, including the escape of a murder accused from custody and an altercation with another officer after getting drunk.

The investigation into the Badlapur rape case is ongoing, and the police are now facing accusations of manipulating evidence and pressuring the accused into making false confessions. This development adds another layer of complexity to the already sensitive case.
