Wed Sep 25 12:55:17 UTC 2024: ## Bombay High Court to Hear Plea on Police Encounter of Badlapur Sexual Assault Accused
**Mumbai, September 25 (ANI):** The Bombay High Court will hear a petition filed by the father of Akshay Shinde, the accused in the Badlapur sexual assault case, who was killed in a police encounter. The petition, filed by Anna Shinde through lawyer Amit Katranvare, alleges that his son was killed in a fake encounter and demands a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case.
Shinde, a former school janitor, was arrested on August 17 for allegedly sexually abusing two girls in a school toilet. He was being transported from Taloja Central Jail to the Thane Crime Branch office when he allegedly opened fire on police officers with their own revolver near the Mumbra bypass.
The Thane Police claim Shinde snatched the weapon and fired during an escape attempt. He was taken to the hospital where he died. His body was later transferred to JJ Hospital for a post-mortem.
The encounter has sparked controversy between the ruling Mahayuti government and the opposition in Maharashtra, with the state headed for Assembly polls later this year. The opposition has alleged a “fake encounter” while the ruling party maintains the incident was a legitimate response to Shinde’s attempt to escape custody and resist arrest.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has directed the implementation of the Centre’s guidelines on safety and security of children in schools across the states and union territories.
