Tue Sep 24 20:41:31 UTC 2024: ## “Badlapur Rape Accused Killed in Police Encounter, CID Takes Over Probe”

**Thane, Maharashtra:** The Maharashtra Crime Investigation Department (CID) has taken over the investigation into the controversial “encounter killing” of Akshay Shinde, the prime accused in the rape of two nursery girls in Badlapur. Shinde was killed in a police shootout on Monday while being transported from Taloja Jail to Badlapur.

The CID team will be investigating the incident after a special probe team formed by the Thane Police Commissioner handed over the relevant documents. An autopsy was conducted on Shinde’s body at Sir J.J. Hospital in Mumbai and later taken back to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwe (Thane) before being handed over to his family for the last rites.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Police have registered an accidental death report, claiming that Shinde was killed in self-defense by the police escort team after he allegedly snatched an Assistant Police Inspector’s revolver and fired at him. A separate case has been filed against Shinde under the BNS and Arms Act.

Shinde, a 24-year-old sweeper at a primary school, was accused of raping two nursery girls aged 3 and 5 on August 12 and 13. His arrest on August 17 sparked public outrage in Badlapur, leading to protests, blockades, and calls for his public hanging.

The MahaYuti government responded to the public outcry with a series of measures, including the suspension of four cops, the sacking of the school trustees, and the transfer of the case to a fast-track court.

The CID’s involvement in the investigation comes amidst questions and controversies surrounding the encounter killing. The investigation is expected to examine the circumstances leading to the shootout and determine if any wrongdoing occurred.
