**Thane, India** – A police inspector has claimed he shot and killed a man accused of sexual abuse in self-defense during an encounter while transporting him from Taloja Jail in Navi Mumbai to Thane.

Inspector Sanjay Shinde, one of four officers present in the police van, told India Today TV that the accused, Akshay Shinde, became increasingly aggressive during the journey, questioning his arrest and using abusive language. Shinde stated that Akshay even threatened to kill everyone inside the van.

According to Shinde, the situation escalated when Akshay grabbed a pistol from Assistant Police Inspector (API) Nilesh More. A struggle ensued, during which the weapon discharged, injuring More in the thigh. Akshay then fired two more shots, both missing their targets, before threatening the officers again.

Fearing for his life and the safety of his colleagues, Inspector Shinde fired a single shot at Akshay, incapacitating him. The encounter saw a total of four rounds fired, with one shot from Akshay injuring More and the final shot being fired by Shinde in self-defense.

The police have requested the case be handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for investigation. The CID will examine any potential breaches in standard operating procedures for prisoner transportation.

The incident has sparked controversy, with some questioning the police’s account of the encounter. The CID investigation will focus on determining whether the shooting was indeed an act of self-defense or a case of custodial death.
