**Samos, Greece** – A small boat carrying migrants from Turkey sank off the Greek island of Samos in the eastern Aegean Sea on Monday, resulting in the deaths of at least four people, Greek authorities confirmed.
The coast guard recovered the bodies of three women and a young girl from the water. Five other migrants were rescued from the sea, and an additional 26 survivors were found on shore. A large-scale search and rescue operation is ongoing, with fears that more people may be missing. High winds in the area have hampered rescue efforts.
It is unclear how the boat, believed to be a small dinghy, capsized. The nationalities and identities of both the deceased and survivors remain unknown.
The incident was first reported by a local resident who heard cries for help from the sea.
Migrant shipwrecks are a common tragedy in the Aegean Sea, as Greece remains a major entry point into the European Union for individuals fleeing conflict and poverty in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Despite increased security measures along the land and sea border with Turkey, thousands attempt the perilous journey across the Aegean Sea, often in unseaworthy vessels. In recent months, smugglers have also been utilizing high-speed boats to transport migrants.
