Mon Sep 23 21:44:09 UTC 2024: ## 30 Bodies Found on Drifting Boat off Senegal Coast, Migrant Crisis Worsens

**Dakar, Senegal** – The Senegalese military confirmed the discovery of at least 30 bodies on a boat drifting off the coast of Dakar on Monday. The vessel was found 70 kilometers from the capital, with the advanced state of decomposition making identification difficult. The military has launched an investigation to determine the boat’s origin and the exact number of victims.

This tragedy follows a recent boat capsizing off the coast of Senegal earlier this month, resulting in the deaths of at least 37 people. The incident underscores the desperate situation faced by migrants leaving West Africa in search of a better life.

Driven by conflict, poverty, and a lack of jobs, many migrants embark on dangerous journeys across the Atlantic, aiming to reach the Canary Islands and ultimately continental Europe. The number of migrants arriving in the Canary Islands has surged this year, with over 22,300 arrivals recorded so far, a 126% increase compared to the same period last year.

Senegalese authorities have stepped up efforts to curb the flow of migrants, arresting hundreds of individuals and suspected smugglers in recent months. However, the tragedies continue, highlighting the perilous nature of the Atlantic route.

The Spanish migrant rights group, Walking Borders, estimates that thousands of migrants have perished on this route this year alone. Lost vessels often drift for months, eventually washing ashore in the Caribbean or Latin America, carrying the tragic remnants of the desperate journey.
