Mon Sep 23 18:06:22 UTC 2024: ## UN Faces Criticism Amidst Global Conflicts, But Remains Vital: Experts

**New York, NY** – As global conflicts intensify, resulting in widespread civilian casualties, the United Nations is facing mounting criticism for its perceived failure to maintain peace. Critics point to the ongoing bloodshed in Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan as evidence that the organization is failing in its core mission.

However, experts argue that the UN is being scapegoated for problems beyond its control, particularly the deep divisions among its member states. The Security Council, tasked with enforcing peace, remains paralyzed on key issues due to vetoes from powerful nations like the US and Russia.

“It’s obvious that we are not having peace and security in the world, and it’s obvious that it’s not because of the UN as an institution that that doesn’t happen,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. “It’s because of member states.”

While the UN has been unable to prevent conflicts involving major powers, Richard Gowan of the International Crisis Group argues that the organization still provides a crucial forum for dialogue and diplomacy. “It’s ultimately better to have the US and Russia arguing over Syria in the Security Council rather than fighting a hot war in Syria,” he said.

Oona Hathaway, a professor of international law at Yale University, highlighted the UN’s often overlooked successes in preventing wars, calling for greater cooperation from its members. “What you don’t see is the wars that don’t happen,” she said.

Despite facing criticism, experts agree that the UN remains essential for maintaining international order. Jean-Marie Guehenno, the former head of UN peacekeeping, emphasized that the institution is irreplaceable, noting that while the UN is currently struggling, it would be detrimental to dismantle it.

“So (countries) whine, they say the UN is useless – but at the same time they acknowledge it’s still a useful forum, and a bellwether,” he said. “A bellwether that has been trampled, insulted, and left in bad shape – but with the hope of a better future.”

While the UN’s power is limited, particularly in terms of resources, Guterres insists that the organization’s humanitarian efforts remain crucial, rescuing people in dire situations across the globe. Despite the challenges, the UN continues to play a vital role in navigating the complex geopolitical landscape, offering a platform for dialogue and a beacon of hope for a more peaceful future.
