**New York, NY** – Brooklyn-based artist Chitra Ganesh has unveiled a new large-scale public video installation at Penn Station, adding to the “Art at Amtrak” series curated by Debra Simon. The installation, titled “Regeneration,” is a highly symbolic narrative focused on the regenerative power of plants, designed to remind commuters of the vibrant life thriving in nature and encourage a reset of both the mental and the physical.
Known for her distinct graphic and comic style, Ganesh blends South Asian iconography with science fiction and queer feminist theory. In “Regeneration,” she uses various plants, each representing resilience, healing, and growth, to highlight humanity’s symbiotic relationship with nature, particularly in a time of environmental crisis.
“I use plants from many regions worldwide to underscore humanity’s consistent recognition and association of plants with healing, regeneration, growth, resilience and remembrance,” said Ganesh, emphasizing the crucial importance of plants in human consciousness and the need for a renewed connection with the natural world.
The video installation, marking the first time the “Art at Amtrak” series has brought art to the Hilton Corridor, complements Ganesh’s other video work, “Coherence,” currently on view in Moynihan Train Hall. Both pieces explore the interplay between inner and outer landscapes, highlighting the significance of individual and collective experiences in the face of societal and psychic realities.
“I want to offer harried, preoccupied and anxious travelers a moment of respite,” said Ganesh, hoping to provide a sense of calm and beauty amidst the hectic environment of Penn Station. “Perhaps engaging with some moments of beauty and depictions of natural beauty—in worlds that exist both just outside and far beyond the confines of massive transport hubs like Penn Station—allows some breathing room and a reset.”
“Regeneration” and “Coherence” invite audiences to contemplate the interconnectedness of time, environment, and resilience, serving as powerful metaphors for hope and survival in a world facing numerous threats.
The installation, which is on view as part of the “Art at Amtrak” series, is a testament to the power of art to connect with audiences in unexpected spaces, prompting reflection and offering a moment of peace within the bustling chaos of New York City.
