Renowned motion-capture actor and director Andy Serkis is venturing into the world of artificial intelligence with a new Lord of the Rings project. While details are still under wraps, Serkis, known for his iconic roles as Gollum and Caesar, revealed that his production company, Imaginarium, is working on a “narrative-driven story” featuring AI characters.
The project, tentatively titled “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” will begin with 2D characters that “come out into the AR [augmented reality] world,” transforming into AI characters controlled by artists and directors. Serkis envisions a future where audiences can directly interact with these computer-generated characters.
While the format of the project remains unclear, Serkis sees AI as a powerful tool, dismissing fears surrounding its potential: “It is another form of magic that is frightening people. Even the biggest VFX companies are not creating as great things as individuals in their basements.”
He emphasizes the need for proper monetization of artists’ work in this new realm, stating, “It’s taken a long time for actors to even understand what it is to put on a costume…and do essentially what you do [normally], which is act. We need the permissions to be there so you are able in some way to monetize these artists’ [work] in a proper way.”
Serkis’ foray into AI-driven storytelling marks a significant step in the evolution of filmmaking. With “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” he aims to push boundaries and explore the possibilities of immersive and interactive experiences for audiences.
