**Kaliningrad, Russia:** An American man has been sentenced to six years in prison for attempting to illegally take his four-year-old son out of Russia, according to a court in the Kaliningrad region. The unidentified father was found guilty of attempting to flee to Poland with the child, who holds Russian citizenship, after a visit in July 2023.
The court statement, released on Telegram, explained that the man did not obtain the consent of the child’s mother to leave the country. The father and son traveled most of the way to the Polish border before abandoning their vehicle and attempting to cross into Poland through a forested swamp. Russian border guards apprehended the pair, leading to the father’s arrest and subsequent sentencing.
This incident comes amidst deeply strained relations between the US and Russia, at their lowest point since the Cold War due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Several Americans are currently imprisoned in Russia on various charges. However, a recent prisoner swap saw the West release Russian spies in exchange for, among others, US-Russian dual national Alsu Kurmasheva, a Radio Liberty/Radio Free Europe journalist. Kurmasheva was detained for over nine months on charges of spreading false information about the Russian military, widely considered retaliatory.
