Wed Sep 25 07:54:51 UTC 2024: ## India Reports First Case of Deadlier Mpox Variant, Clade 1b, in Kerala

**Malappuram, Kerala:** India has reported its first case of the Mpox Clade 1b variant, a strain considered more virulent and deadly than the Clade II variant that caused the global outbreak in 2022. The infected individual, a 38-year-old man who recently returned from the United Arab Emirates, is currently stable, according to officials.

The patient experienced a fever and chickenpox-like rash, prompting doctors to send samples for testing. This is the first confirmed case of Clade 1b in India, raising concerns about the potential for a larger outbreak in the densely populated country.

“Worry for India is that the case detected here is of Clade 1b variant,” said Dr. Ravi Shekher Jha, director of pulmonology at Fortis Hospital, Faridabad. “India is a densely populated country, where any epidemic of this type can be disastrous.”

Mpox, caused by the monkeypox virus, is divided into two main clades: Clade 1 (Congo Basin or Central African clade) and Clade 2 (West African clade). Clade 1b is a genetic variant within the Central African clade, known for its more severe symptoms.

While Clade 2 infections generally result in mild symptoms and a high survival rate, Clade 1b infections can be more dangerous. This highlights the importance of early detection, isolation, and appropriate medical guidance.

“People who have been sick with a recent travel history should isolate themselves and take appropriate medical guidance,” advised Dr. Kirti Sabnis, infectious disease specialist at Fortis Hospital Mulund & Kalyan.

The WHO declared Mpox a public health emergency of international concern last month, citing the global spread of the virus. India has reported 30 cases since the declaration, with this latest case being the first confirmed Clade 1b infection.
