Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson has cemented her place among the WNBA greats, winning her third career Most Valuable Player award, the league announced Sunday. This achievement ties her with iconic players Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, and Lauren Jackson.
Wilson became only the second player in WNBA history to win the award unanimously, echoing Cynthia Cooper’s 1997 accomplishment. Her dominant season saw her lead the league in blocks while boasting the highest scoring average in WNBA history at 26.9 points per game, shattering Diana Taurasi’s 2006 record.
Beyond her scoring prowess, Wilson consistently dominated the court, amassing over 1,000 points and 450 rebounds while leading the league in blocks. Her exceptional performance also included two of the highest scoring games in the WNBA, scoring 42 points against the Dallas Wings and 41 points against the Phoenix Mercury.
Beyond the court, Wilson was recognized for her community involvement, receiving the 2024 Dawn Staley Community Leadership Award.
Wilson’s MVP campaign has propelled the Aces towards a potential dynasty. The team, currently holding the fourth seed in the WNBA playoffs, is seeking a third consecutive championship.
Wilson, fueled by a single fourth-place vote from last year’s MVP voting, expressed her determination to excel, stating, “It propelled me a little bit as I started my offseason workouts, but around February I was over it… I didn’t want to give that person that energy, that’s when I started to lock in.”
As one of the most decorated players in WNBA history, Wilson continues to build her legacy as she leads the Vegas franchise in points and rebounds.
