**SPOILER ALERT: This article contains major plot details from the first two episodes of “Agatha All Along.”**
Marvel fans, get ready for a new kind of magic! The highly anticipated spinoff series, “Agatha All Along,” starring Kathryn Hahn as the beloved (and somewhat villainous) Agatha Harkness, has finally premiered on Disney+, and it’s a wild ride.
Following the success of “WandaVision,” creator Jac Schaeffer was immediately drawn back to the world of Westview, particularly to Agatha. “I just couldn’t stop, I love that world,” she admits, explaining how the idea for a series focused solely on Agatha took shape.
The premiere opens with Agatha still trapped within the spell cast by Wanda at the end of “WandaVision,” forced to live as the seemingly harmless Agnes. However, instead of continuing the sitcom format, this Agnes has adopted the persona of a hardened police detective, investigating the death of a woman strikingly similar to Wanda.
Agatha is eventually freed from the spell by a mysterious teen, “Teen” (Joe Locke), who is a die-hard Agatha fan, and Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza), a witch with a contentious past with Agatha who wishes her dead.
Both Teen and Agatha seek power, with Agatha having lost her magic to Wanda and Teen lacking any at all. Their goal? To find the Witches’ Road, a mystical domain where they can obtain what they desire most.
To reach the road, they must assemble a coven of witches: Lilia Calderu (Patti LuPone), a divination witch; Jennifer Kale (Sasheer Zamata), a potions witch; Alice Wu-Gulliver (Ali Ahn), a protections witch; and Sharon Davis (Debra Jo Rupp), a Westview resident with a magical green thumb, known from “WandaVision” as Mrs. Hart.
The coven faces life-or-death trials designed to test their magic before they can reach the road, creating a compelling narrative with an episodic format reminiscent of classic television.
The show’s aesthetic is inspired by classic horror, blending elements of “Suspiria,” “The Exorcist,” and “Poltergeist,” while still maintaining a comedic tone. Schaeffer cites George Miller’s “The Witches of Eastwick” as a major inspiration, creating a sense of grandness and campiness.
The show’s creators have intentionally left Teen’s true identity shrouded in mystery, obfuscating his speech and name. While fans are eagerly trying to decode his identity, Schaeffer suggests they look beyond the literal interpretations.
“Agatha All Along” promises to be a thrilling and surprising new addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, delving deeper into the complexities of Agatha Harkness and exploring the power of magic, friendship, and the dark side of the supernatural.
