Mon Sep 23 22:17:52 UTC 2024: ## Latinx Art Flourishes at La Feria in NYC

**New York City** – The inaugural La Feria Latinx print media fair, held in Manhattan’s Cooper Square, brought together over 30 artists showcasing a vibrant array of art, books, posters, and more. The event, organized by NYU’s Latinx Project, was a celebration of Latinx creativity and cultural expression.

Music, a key element of the fair, provided a lively backdrop as artists spoke about their work. Selena’s “Amor Prohibido” and Shakira and Prince Royce’s “Deja Vu” filled the air, reflecting the diverse backgrounds of the featured artists.

From $1 prints by the Queens-based Mobile Print Power collective to over $100 for Gabriel García Román’s Queer Icon prints, the fair offered a range of art accessible to diverse audiences. Panamanian-American artist Nicoletta Daríta de la Brown, whose booth was titled “Botánica Bodega,” sold large mesh bags inspired by her memories of shopping with her grandmother.

Social worker Christian Casas, who exhibited ceramic tiles, highlighted the meditative power of art for “new Americans” who are navigating new languages and environments.

The fair also featured works by artists like Les Lopez and Inuer Pichardo, who documented their South Bronx neighborhood’s changes through photography, and Francisco Donoso, who transformed legal documents from his DACA proceedings into art.

Oscar Diaz, a photographer, paid tribute to Cecilia Gentili, an Argentinian-American trans activist, with photographs from a “baptism shoot” months before Gentili’s passing.

The fair, described as “a bodega of art,” fostered a welcoming atmosphere where artists comfortably switched between Spanish and English, creating a sense of inclusivity and belonging.

La Feria Latinx was a testament to the rich artistic talent within the Latinx community and the importance of supporting independent art initiatives.
