Mon Sep 23 22:35:06 UTC 2024: ## Nebraska Lawmaker Blocks Trump’s Electoral Vote Strategy, Harris Leads Trump in New NBC Poll

**LINCOLN, NE** – A key Nebraska Republican state senator has thwarted President Donald Trump’s attempt to change the state’s electoral vote allocation, effectively blocking a move that could have given Trump an extra electoral vote in the upcoming election.

State Sen. Mike McDonnell announced his opposition to the change, citing the short timeframe before the November election. Trump’s allies had been pushing for a special legislative session to switch Nebraska to a winner-take-all system, which would have granted all of the state’s electoral votes to the presidential candidate who wins the popular vote.

Under the current system, Nebraska allocates its electoral votes by congressional district, with the swing district around Omaha twice going to Democrats in recent years, giving them one electoral vote. A winner-take-all model would have all but guaranteed Trump the state’s electoral votes.

Meanwhile, a new NBC News poll shows Vice President Kamala Harris leading President Trump by 5 points among registered voters. Harris’ popularity has surged since July, and she is viewed as a better representative of change than Trump.

However, despite the positive findings for Democrats, the poll also highlights the closeness of the race. Similar to the 2020 election, the race is currently extremely close, with both candidates’ favorability ratings and public sentiment about the nation’s direction mirroring those of the 2020 campaign.

While Harris leads nationally, new New York Times/Siena battleground polls of Arizona, Georgia, and North Carolina show Trump ahead in those critical states, albeit within the margin of error. The close nature of the race emphasizes the importance of every vote in November.
