Tue Sep 24 03:30:58 UTC 2024: ## Bot Attacks on the Rise: Holiday Shopping Season and Elections at Risk
**New research from DataDome reveals a surge in bot-driven attacks targeting websites across industries, leaving many vulnerable to online fraud and reputational damage.**
The analysis of over 14,000 websites found that a staggering 65% are unprotected against basic bot attacks, while 95% fail to detect advanced bot attacks. This leaves companies, particularly in consumer-centric sectors like luxury, e-commerce, and media, at significant risk.
**Luxury and e-commerce websites, in particular, are facing an alarming lack of protection:** only 5% of luxury brands and 10% of e-commerce sites have full protection against malicious bots. This vulnerability is especially concerning as the holiday shopping season approaches, increasing the potential for financial losses and reputational damage.
**The media industry is also severely exposed:** only 6% of media websites are equipped with robust bot protection, leaving the remaining 94% vulnerable to ad fraud, content scraping, and DDoS attacks.
**The rise of advanced bots poses a significant threat:** These sophisticated bots, using AI-powered “bot farms” to bypass traditional security measures, are increasingly difficult to detect. In fact, less than 5% of advanced bot attacks are detected.
**Political disinformation is a growing concern:** The use of advanced bots by political actors, as seen in the recent US Department of Justice dismantling of a Russian propaganda campaign, poses a serious threat to election integrity.
**The study highlights the urgency for robust bot protection, particularly for consumer-centric industries and media websites.** Advancements in bot technology have outpaced traditional defenses, making it critical for businesses to implement multi-layered protection strategies.
**Regions like Europe and North America are particularly vulnerable:** with 68% and 64% of websites unprotected, respectively.
**Antoine Vastel, VP of Research at DataDome, stressed the critical need for action:** “The low barriers for creating and deploying bad bots have made them a favored tool for fraudsters. Robust, multi-layered bot protection has never been more urgent.”
