San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy had a strong performance in Sunday’s 27-24 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, throwing for 292 yards and three touchdowns. However, one potential miscue looms large, leaving fans wondering what could have been.
With just over four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and the 49ers leading 24-17, Purdy evaded pressure on a first-and-20 play and found receiver Jauan Jennings for a five-yard gain. But, as NFL analyst Brian Baldinger pointed out, it appeared Purdy had a wide-open Brandon Aiyuk downfield for what could have been a 52-yard touchdown, potentially sealing the win for San Francisco.
It’s unclear what the play call was or why Purdy didn’t attempt the pass to Aiyuk, but the video shows him looking in Aiyuk’s direction before scrambling out of the pocket.
Despite the missed opportunity, Purdy played a fantastic game, especially considering the absence of three key offensive weapons. However, this potential miscue, along with a critical dropped reception by receiver Ronnie Bell, may leave the 49ers’ offense wanting to have those plays back.
