Mon Sep 23 22:50:52 UTC 2024: ## 49ers Suffer Major Blow: Hargrave’s Triceps Injury Casts Shadow Over Season
**SANTA CLARA, CA -** The San Francisco 49ers suffered a significant blow in their Week 1 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, as starting defensive tackle Javon Hargrave sustained a partially torn triceps, coach Kyle Shanahan announced Monday. Hargrave, who had a strong performance against the Rams, is expected to miss the majority of the 2024 season.
“It’s a big loss,” Shanahan said. “I thought he had his best game yesterday. He was a huge factor, really affected the quarterback. He was definitely going in the right direction and was going to have a big year.”
The injury comes at a particularly tough time for the 49ers, who are already dealing with other key injuries. Quarterback Brock Purdy is currently day to day with back soreness, while linebacker Dee Winters aggravated an ankle injury.
While the 49ers hope to see Purdy back soon, the loss of Hargrave leaves a gaping hole on the defensive line. The veteran lineman, who recorded his first sack of the season against the Rams, will require surgery and is likely out for at least a few months.
Shanahan addressed the team’s plans to address the void left by Hargrave. “We’re still working through that,” he said. “We’ve got a couple of guys on the practice squad that we’ll most likely bring up. We’ve got some outside guys who are good inside rushers…But usually you go to your practice squad.”
The 49ers are also hopeful that Kalia Davis, currently on injured reserve following knee surgery, will return soon.
While Hargrave’s injury is a serious blow, Shanahan did not rule out a possible return late in the playoffs if the 49ers make a deep run. However, with a string of key injuries already hampering the team, their initial hopes of a Super Bowl run appear increasingly difficult to achieve.
