Mon Sep 23 22:06:02 UTC 2024: ## Three Tufts Lacrosse Players Hospitalized with Rare Muscle Injury After Workout

**BOSTON** – Three Tufts University men’s lacrosse players remain hospitalized after a rare muscle injury sustained during a voluntary workout earlier this month. The players became ill following a September 16th session led by a Tufts alum and recent graduate of the BUD/S Navy SEAL training program.

The workout, which involved approximately 50 team members, was supervised by medical professionals. Nine players were hospitalized with rhabdomyolysis, a serious condition where muscle tissue breaks down, potentially leading to kidney failure. The three remaining hospitalized players are reportedly responding to treatment and are expected to be discharged soon.

Tufts University has announced the appointment of an independent investigator to review the events leading up to, during, and after the workout. The investigation will also assess the university’s response and review existing procedures and policies to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

“The team is a tight-knit group of young men who have shown remarkable resilience, understanding and care for each other throughout this episode,” said Patrick Collins, the university’s director of media relations. “We will continue to monitor and work with them closely, and we hope for a rapid return to good health for all involved.”

All team practices have been postponed pending clearance from university medical personnel.

This incident echoes similar cases, such as the 2011 hospitalization of 13 Iowa football players for rhabdomyolysis after an offseason workout. The University of Iowa later settled a lawsuit brought by one of the players for $15,000.
