**BOSTON (AP) -** Three Tufts University men’s lacrosse players remain hospitalized after suffering from rhabdomyolysis, a rare muscle injury, following a supervised workout earlier this month. The incident occurred on September 16th, when approximately 50 team members participated in a 45-minute workout led by a recent graduate of the BUD/S Navy SEAL training program.
Following the workout, nine players were hospitalized for rhabdomyolysis, a condition characterized by the breakdown of muscle tissue. While some players have since been discharged and cleared to resume training, three remain hospitalized but are responding to treatment.
The university has appointed an independent investigator to examine the incident, including the events leading up to the workout, the university’s response, and its procedures and policies. The investigation aims to identify any potential changes needed to prevent similar incidents from occurring.
Tufts University has suspended all team practices pending medical authorization. “The team is a tight-knit group of young men who have shown remarkable resilience, understanding, and care for each other throughout this episode,” said Patrick Collins, the university’s director of media relations. “We will continue to monitor and work with them closely, and we hope for a rapid return to good health for all involved.”
This incident echoes similar cases, such as the hospitalization of 13 Iowa football players for rhabdomyolysis in 2011, highlighting the importance of safe and supervised athletic training practices.
