Mon Sep 23 14:21:37 UTC 2024: ## Russia Deploys Upgraded FAB Bombs in Zaporizhzhia Attacks, Increasing Bombardment Range

**Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine** – Russia has reportedly begun deploying upgraded FAB aerial bombs with extended ranges in its attacks on Ukraine. This new development comes after a series of strikes on the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia overnight into Monday, injuring 16 people.

According to Russian independent news outlet Astra, explosions were heard in Zaporizhzhia around 11 p.m. local time, suggesting the use of upgraded FAB bombs for the first time. While initial reports suggested the use of KAB guided bombs, Kremlin-linked Russian outlet Top War clarified that the strikes involved FAB bombs fitted with a guided planning and correction module (UMPK), effectively increasing their range.

Ukraine’s air force had previously issued alerts for KAB bombs in Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Sumy regions. The country has struggled to defend against Russia’s arsenal of glide bombs, which have proven highly destructive and allow Moscow’s aircraft to operate beyond the reach of many Ukrainian air defense systems.

Katja Fedina, a defense and security analyst at RAND, explained that while both KAB and FAB bombs are formidable, FAB bombs are not inherently smart bombs and require the UMPK module for course correction and guidance. This module, along with new glide wings and sensors, allows FAB bombs to be dropped from a greater distance, further challenging Ukrainian defenses.

Russian media reports suggest that the new long-range glide bomb used in the attacks is the UMPB D-30SN, boasting a range of around 50 miles, significantly increasing the distance Moscow’s aircraft can reach.

Military expert and journalist David Hambling believes this development allows Russia to carry out large-scale bombardments, given their ample supply of glide bombs and aircraft.

Ukrainian authorities in Zaporizhzhia reported at least seven airstrikes on the city and surrounding districts, with Governor Ivan Fedorov stating that Russia targeted the city center. The Ukrainian air force declined to comment on the use of upgraded FAB bombs, and the Russian Defense Ministry did not respond to requests for comment.
