**Anchorage, Alaska** – A joint Russian-Chinese naval flotilla, consisting of nine warships, transited the La Perouse Strait on Monday, heading towards the Northern Pacific Ocean. The move prompted the United States to deploy two warships, the USS Lake Erie and USS Sterett, for homeland defense operations in the region, including the Aleutian Islands.
The Russian-Chinese naval formation participated in the second phase of the “Northern/Interaction-2024” exercise, which began on Saturday in the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk. The joint drill involved eight warships: four from the Russian Pacific Fleet and four from the Chinese Northern Theater Command.
The US Navy confirmed that the Sterett’s deployment was a direct response to the Russian exercise. This joint operation marks the fifth such patrol by Russian and Chinese warships in the Pacific Ocean since 2021, highlighting a growing trend of military cooperation between the two nations.
The US military has been increasing its presence in the region in response to heightened Russian and Chinese activity. In addition to the deployed warships, the US Army sent three units to Shemya Island, a remote location in the Aleutian archipelago.
This joint exercise and the US response highlight escalating tensions in the region, particularly near Alaska, where Russia and China have been increasingly assertive in recent years. This includes the deployment of bombers to the Alaska air defense zone and the transit of Russian naval vessels into US economic waters.
While the US has maintained that these activities do not represent a direct threat, the deployment of military assets underscores the growing strategic importance of the Arctic region and the increasing importance of US-led security cooperation in the face of growing Russian and Chinese military ambitions.
