Mon Sep 23 14:31:19 UTC 2024: ## Tlaib’s Criticism of Protester Charges Sparks False Anti-Semitism Accusations

**DETROIT, MI** – A controversy erupted online after Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib criticized Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s decision to charge 11 individuals involved in a pro-Palestinian demonstration at the University of Michigan. Tlaib, the only Palestinian American in Congress, argued that Nessel’s actions set a dangerous precedent and suggested possible bias within the Attorney General’s office.

While Tlaib never mentioned Nessel’s Jewish faith, some individuals, including Nessel herself, falsely claimed that the congresswoman had accused the attorney general of pursuing the charges due to her religion. This led to a widespread smear campaign against Tlaib, with accusations of antisemitism being leveled at her.

Nessel, who defended the decision to charge the protesters, condemned Tlaib’s comments on social media, characterizing them as antisemitic. She also criticized a Detroit News cartoon that depicted Tlaib alongside an exploding pager as Islamophobic.

However, a fact-check by the Detroit Metro Times revealed that Tlaib never referenced Nessel’s religion in her statements. Despite this, the false claims spread widely, with Jewish Insider editor-in-chief Josh Kraushaar alleging that Tlaib accused Nessel of acting based on her religion.

The Anti-Defamation League’s CEO, Jonathan Greenblatt, criticized Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer for not condemning Tlaib’s alleged antisemitism, while CNN host Jake Tapper repeated the false accusations during an interview with Whitmer.

The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) strongly condemned the false accusations, calling them a “hateful hoax.” They pointed out that three of the 11 protesters charged by Nessel are Muslim, and some are Jewish.

Numerous individuals on social media also denounced the false claims, arguing that Tlaib never made any mention of Nessel’s religion and that the accusations were part of a concerted smear campaign.

The controversy highlights the dangers of misrepresenting criticisms as antisemitism and the need for responsible reporting and factual accuracy in the public sphere. It also raises concerns about the potential for silencing dissent by falsely accusing individuals of prejudice.
