Napoli have confirmed that their starting goalkeeper, Alex Meret, sustained a Grade 2 adductor longus strain in his left thigh during Sunday’s match against Juventus. The injury, which forced Meret off the field in the match, is more serious than initially feared, according to reports in Italy.
The 27-year-old Italian international will be sidelined for at least a month, meaning he will miss crucial matches for both Napoli and the Italian national team. This includes the upcoming Serie A fixtures as well as the Nations League matches against Belgium and Israel in October.
Meret, who has kept three clean sheets in five Serie A appearances this season, has already started a recovery program. The Italian keeper’s absence will likely see Elia Caprile, who made his senior debut in the Juventus game, take over as the starting goalkeeper. Napoli will also be without their key player for their Coppa Italia game against Palermo on Thursday.
