Mon Sep 23 15:13:22 UTC 2024: ## Homelander Soars into Mortal Kombat 1 with a Griffin Animality

Mortal Kombat 1 is getting a new expansion pack, “Khaos Reigns,” launching Tuesday, and it’s bringing a whole host of new playable characters and features. One of the highlights is the inclusion of Homelander, the villainous superhero from Amazon’s “The Boys,” who will be getting a unique animality.

While the team initially considered an eagle for Homelander’s transformation, due to its association with America and his star-spangled persona, they ultimately decided on a griffin for a more distinct and memorable effect. As seen in the newly released video, Homelander’s animality sees him morphing into a red-white-and-blue griffin, tearing apart his opponent before finishing them off with laser vision.

This isn’t the only animality coming with the expansion. Peacemaker gets his trusty companion Eagly, Omni-Man transforms into the Invincible kaiju Hail Mary, and Johnny Cage becomes a shark.

Co-creator of Mortal Kombat, Ed Boon, explained that the idea for animalities stemmed from a persistent online rumor about a hidden character that could transform into an animal. “It was a lie, but that rumor just persisted. So eventually we said, ‘Let’s make it a reality,'” he said.

The inclusion of Homelander is just the latest example of the franchise’s willingness to bring in iconic characters from other entertainment properties. Previous additions included Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, and Spawn. Boon stated that they were initially drawn to horror movie characters because of their inherent violent nature, but “fortunately enough, an R-rated superhero TV show was created” in the form of “The Boys,” allowing them to expand their horizons.

The Khaos Reigns expansion also brings in Ghostface from “Scream,” the T-1000 from “Terminator 2,” and Conan the Barbarian, further showcasing the game’s commitment to referencing their source material.

The “Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns” expansion will be available Tuesday at 11 a.m. ET/8 a.m. PT for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store).
