Tue Sep 24 00:10:50 UTC 2024: ## Escalating Middle East Conflict: Hundreds Dead in Israeli Strikes, Gaza Shelters Destroyed
**Beirut/Jerusalem/Gaza City** – Tensions in the Middle East reached a dangerous peak on Monday as Israel launched hundreds of retaliatory strikes against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon, reportedly leaving nearly 300 dead. The strikes, the deadliest since October’s regional crisis, also targeted Gaza, including a refugee camp, according to UN humanitarians.
The UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed grave alarm at the escalating situation, condemning the heavy civilian casualties, including children and women, and the continued strikes by Hezbollah into Israel.
UN officials are warning of the dire consequences of further escalation, stressing that attacks on civilians are war crimes. The UN’s top official in Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, has begun an official visit to Israel to meet with government officials, emphasizing that there is no military solution to the conflict.
In Lebanon, the Israeli military sent phone and social media messages to residents in the south, urging them to stay away from any buildings or villages linked to Hezbollah. The militant group, in turn, launched over 150 projectiles into northern Israel over the weekend, displacing approximately 60,000 Israelis.
The UN peacekeeping mission UNIFIL, which patrols the Blue Line separating Lebanon and Israel, is deeply concerned for the safety of civilians, calling for urgent de-escalation and reiterating the need for the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 to address the conflict’s root causes.
Meanwhile, in Gaza, Israeli strikes have destroyed shelters in the Nuseirat refugee camp, displacing thousands more. Heavy rains and high tides have further exacerbated the situation, overwhelming makeshift shelters and creating a severe health risk for the displaced population.
The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, is warning of disease outbreaks due to lack of sanitation, while the UN aid coordination office, OCHA, reports critical shortages of clean water in northern Gaza, exacerbated by damaged infrastructure and restricted access for repairs.
The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is providing emergency water supplies to nearly 900,000 people in Gaza, but access to clean water remains a major concern for the displaced population.
