Mon Sep 23 19:12:13 UTC 2024: ## Accused Badlapur Rapist Killed in Police Encounter, Raising Concerns About Justice
**Badlapur, Maharashtra:** Akshay Shinde, the prime accused in the rape of two minor girls in Badlapur, was killed in an alleged police encounter on Monday evening. The incident has sparked outrage and allegations of a cover-up, with the opposition accusing the ruling government of orchestrating the death to protect the real perpetrators.
According to police, Shinde snatched a weapon from an officer and opened fire while being transported for investigation from Taloja jail. In the ensuing shootout, Police Inspector Sanjay Shinde and Assistant Police Inspector Nilesh More were injured. Shinde, who reportedly worked with former encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma, fired the fatal shot.
The encounter has drawn comparisons to Sharma’s notorious “encounter killings” of criminals during his tenure in the Mumbai Police. Shinde, a member of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to investigate the Badlapur case, was previously suspended for allegedly aiding the escape of murder accused Vijay Palande.
Opposition leaders, including Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Priyanka Chaturvedi, have slammed the incident, calling it a “shoot and scoot tactic” to deflect attention from the real perpetrators. They claim the government is attempting to shield other accused individuals, including school board members and BJP office bearers, who are currently at large.
The opposition’s accusations highlight the growing concern about the use of “encounters” as a tool to silence dissent and bypass the judicial process. The families of the rape victims are now left with questions about the true nature of the encounter and the possibility of justice being denied.
This incident has raised serious questions about the state government’s commitment to justice and the increasing use of extrajudicial killings by law enforcement agencies. The demand for a thorough and independent investigation into the encounter is growing louder, as is the call for accountability for those responsible.
