**New York, NY** – Broadway will honor the legacy of legendary actor James Earl Jones with a dimming of lights on Thursday, September 26th at 6:45 pm ET, the Broadway League announced.
The traditional tribute, where marquees of Broadway venues go dark for one minute, will pay respect to the two-time Tony Award winner, who passed away on September 9th at the age of 93.
Jones, a recipient of the 2017 Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement, left an indelible mark on the theatre world with his powerful performances in iconic productions like “The Great White Hope,” “Fences,” “The Iceman Cometh,” and “Driving Miss Daisy,” among many others. His final Broadway appearance was in 2015 with “The Gin Game” alongside Cicely Tyson.
“James Earl Jones was a true pillar of the Broadway industry,” said Jason Laks, Interim President of The Broadway League. “He provided unforgettable experiences to multiple generations of theatregoers, accumulating numerous accolades for his iconic performances across various entertainment mediums. We are particularly proud of his legacy on Broadway and grateful for the many memorable performances he graced our stages with.”
Jones’s impact on Broadway was further solidified in September 2022 when the Cort Theatre was renamed the James Earl Jones Theatre in his honor.
The dimming of lights on Thursday will serve as a poignant reminder of the profound influence Jones had on the world of theatre, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations of artists and audiences alike.
