**Milan, Italy -** Inter Milan legend Beppe Bergomi has expressed his disappointment with the Nerazzurri’s performance in Sunday’s 2-1 derby loss to AC Milan, highlighting their lack of focus and the age of their defense.
“They had the wrong approach because they had to expect a strong start from Milan,” Bergomi told Sky Sport Italia. “Inter are the oldest team in the league. They struggled in midfield, and Milan’s strikers’ pace really caused trouble for them. Physically, I didn’t see Inter well.”
The former Inter defender believes the team’s Champions League draw against Manchester City midweek contributed to their sluggish performance, leaving them mentally and physically exhausted. He also pointed out the lack of focus in the opening game against Genoa, further highlighting the inconsistency in their performances.
“Even against Genoa in Round 1, they lacked attention,” Bergomi stated. “Against Milan, they had to realize Milan was in better shape. They have time, but they need the proper attitude. Without that, it becomes hard.”
Bergomi went on to criticize the defensive unit, stating, “Without certain players who are strong in one-on-one, they have problems when they must dominate proceedings. They were so good with preventive marking last season, but did you see against Milan? When the others accelerate, their defense is old and slow.”
Despite winning the Serie A title by a comfortable margin last season, Bergomi believes the Nerazzurri are not the best team in the league. While their current position at 6th place in the table, level on points with their city rivals, reflects their struggles, they have time to turn things around.
Inter will be looking to bounce back in their next match away to Udinese on Saturday, September 28.
